Discussion of electric mobility in African markets tends to focus on vehicle availability, affordability and range. Those are real constraints. But the industrial value (the part that builds local capability, employment and export potential) sits in the infrastructure and component layers beneath the vehicle.
The infrastructure layer
Charging infrastructure determines whether electric mobility works commercially. That means site selection along genuine traffic and logistics flows rather than prestige locations, realistic assessment of grid capacity and energy supply at each site, and equipment choices that can be maintained locally rather than requiring specialist support from another continent.
Each of those decisions has an industrial consequence. Infrastructure built with local installation and maintenance capability creates durable technical employment. Infrastructure imported entirely as a service does not.
Local capability and localisation
There is meaningful scope for local value addition around charging infrastructure: structural and canopy fabrication, electrical assembly and integration, site works, monitoring software and service operations. Battery-related industrial activity is a longer-term proposition requiring technology partnerships, but it is the layer where the largest industrial value sits.
The realistic sequence starts with assembly, integration and service capability, and progresses toward component manufacture as volume and skills justify it. Attempting to begin with component manufacture, without the supporting industrial base, rarely succeeds.
What partnerships need to look like
Credible electric mobility infrastructure projects involve a combination of partners: an energy or utility participant, a technology and equipment provider willing to support local capability, a property or site partner with genuine corridor locations, and an operator capable of running the network commercially. Industrial and investment partners provide the capital and manufacturing elements.
Projects proceed when those parties are assembled early and the commercial structure is clear. They stall when infrastructure is planned without energy certainty, or when technology is selected before the operating model exists.
The industrial position
Electric mobility is not only a transport transition. Treated deliberately, it is an industrial development opportunity that builds electrical, manufacturing and technical service capability that transfers to other sectors. Treated as an equipment purchase, it is a cost. The difference lies in how the infrastructure is structured from the beginning.
